Cautionary Warning: You may Not agree!
UK and Ireland MD Nathan Vautier has claimed that the Phone can even outstrip the iPhone. TechRadar brings you an in-depth review of the two phones pointing out the differences!
1. The camera
Oh, we know what you’re going to say. “Who needs a 12MP camera on a phone? Nobody needs one that good”. Well, you might be right, be we have to tell you, it’s a stonking good one. In fact, it’s the kind of feature that makes you want to get the phone out because it’s so good. And let’s face it, the less we say about Apple’s 2MP failure the better.
2. The Symbian-based OS
If you’re like us, you’re bored of the same tired interface it seems Sony Ericsson has been rocking for the last umpteen years, so to see a new one really is a breath of fresh air. It adds a whole level of functionality to the device by popping the media at the bottom, navigation at the top and scrollable screens to move between different options. It’s almost like the way you interact with the iPhone, but without having to rumble through hoards of Apps.
3. Movies… lots of Movies
Although not available yet, the Play Now Arena with Movies will give users 15 free downloads out the box for the handset, and five more free per month according to our sources. That’s pretty much all the on-the-go movie downloading you could ever want, and while it’s not the all you can eat stylings of Nokia’s Comes with Music, it’s still a great deal for no more money.
4. Cheap as chips
Well, chips that cost £35 per month that is. But the main difference in terms of cost between the Satio and the iPhone is that the new effort from Sony Ericsson will be free on contract, compared to having to pay upwards of £50 for Apple’s mobile on some packages, which still leaves a bitter taste in our mouths when we think about it.
5. Messaging is easier… and prettier
While it might not have the intuitive word recognition that the iPhone sports for the ham-fisted among us, the Satio has a nice keypad in both QWERTY and alphanumeric modes, with the retro 80s stylings just adding to the mix. The iPhone can’t even text in landscape mode yet, with the much-vaunted 3.0 update still waiting to hit our pockets.
Sony Ericsson cites the large number of handsets in its catalogue so far, most of which have not been properly promoted and advertised, as one of the main reasons of its failure. Talking to TechRadar, Dave Hilton, marketing director for Sony Ericsson UK and Ireland, said that concentrating on setting up a smaller portfolio while maintaining the innovation will be the next major move towards a better figure in the finance stats.
The proprietor believes that the showcased Satio, Yari and Aino will make repair the holes inside the decks of the sinking Titanic:
“That means fewer products, which in turn helps lower costs but still means we can offer new and innovative propositions to help maintain our strong market share.”
And for all those who are expecting the release of PSP Phone, here’s bad news. Its so far, not in the recent agenda of Sony Ericsson!!
“We’ve brought a better gaming experience to mobiles, and [I don't think] we need the PlayStation brand for that. It’s something we’re looking to step away from today [using sub-brands] as when you’re looking at the higher end of the market consumers want it all: good gaming, video, music etc. With a sub brand, you’re kind of putting a limit [on the phone].”

Sony Ericsson Will Unite Walkman and Cyber-shot Brands?
LONDON – Sony Ericsson plans to drop the flagship Walkman and Cyber-shot brands on its handsets in developed markets such as the UK.
Andre Jacquet, head of global marketing business management, said that the message conveyed by the brand names was no longer relevant. He added that as more consumers sought phones featuring a digital camera, music and internet services, sticking with the Walkman and Cyber-shot names was ‘wrong’.
Sony Ericsson now plans to roll out an ‘Entertainment Unlimited’ proposition, which it said would unite the Walkman and Cyber-shot brands under a single name.
Sony Ericsson launched its first music-focused mobile handsets in 2005. Since then, it has sold more than 100m Walkman-branded phones.
Jacquet claimed local consumers would decide whether there was sufficient demand for the brands to be used in emerging markets. ‘In some countries, having a mobile phone is a big step forward,’ he said.
The manufacturer will continue with the launch of two Walkman handsets this year: the W205 Walkman, and the W995 Walkman.
Next week, the company will unveil its first touch-screen 12-megapixel camera phone with video, games, Google Maps and music services. The handset, called Idou, will go head-to-head with the iPhone.
