A limited edition, exclusive to the Middle East, the new phone is the most chic and opulent fashion accessory of this fall.

Commenting on this limited edition phone, Mr. Mohamad Salama, Head of Marketing, Sony Ericsson, MENA says,

‘This model features a 5.1megapixel camera with smile shutter, smart contrast, face detection and photofix. Not just that, it also includes Xenon flash, the new trend in mobile phones.’

Xenon flash is a replacement for the photoflash LED used in other camera phones, and is very handy as it produces good indoor images even without very bright lighting. With the instant sharing feature, users can enjoy sharing games, videos, music and much more on the spot.

‘Wireless printing is another interesting feature that Sony Ericsson has included in this Mocha Gold limited edition. Users can literally print from anywhere. No more hassles of carrying plugs and laptops around or getting the operating system to identify the printer. It works by launching the application, selecting a photo, and then a print command is sent to the printer via the Wi-Fi network.’ Mr. Salama added.

The C901 Middle East exclusive includes other features like video stabilizer & recording, red-eye reduction, as well as video and picture blogging capabilities.

In a live web chat yesterday, members of Sony Ericsson’s team of green mobile phone developers revealed that the cost of the C901 Greenheart phone for German consumers will stand at around 359 Euros.

This equates to a price point of around £300 in the UK for the handset, which forms a key part of the company’s drive to cut its carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2015.

Meanwhile, the similarly planet-friendly Naite phone will sell for about 159 Euros, or around £136, the Sony Ericsson development team revealed.

Both handsets employ recycled plastics in their construction and use less packaging than standard mobile phones.

They will also feature a range of environmentally-friendly applications, such as a carbon footprint calculator, and a pedometer, dubbed WalkMate.

The C901 Greenheart is being tipped for release during the second quarter of this year, with the Naite expected to go on sale shortly afterwards.

Sony Ericsson’s release schedule for this year also includes the Satio, a 12 megapixel cameraphone, and the successor to the Xperia X1, the Xperia X2.

Sony Ericsson said the phones honoured their ‘long standing commitment to eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals from the product design and manufacturing process.’

They claim the changes reduces the CO2 footprint of the phones by 15 per cent.

Both phones include an application to let the customer work out the greenhouse gas emissions they can save by walking instead of taking a car.

The C901 and Naite are expected to go on sale later this year. They are being promoted as the ‘pioneer products’ of Sony’s green business strategy.

The company said it hopes to cut  20 per cent of its carbon dioxide emissions by 2015. They have an ‘environmental warranty’ to recycle any Sony Ericsson product taken to a collection point in an environmentally sound way.

Mats Pellbäck-Scharp, head of corporate sustainability for Sony Ericsson said: ‘We’re proud to have taken the next step in making our products and process more sustainable.

‘The global take back scheme and the GreenHeart project bring us closer to our vision of being a leader in sustainability in the mobile phone industry.’

The handset industry is closely followed by environmental organisations around the world due to its large scale. More than 1 billion phones are sold globally each year, which requires the use of sales boxes, add-ons and tonnes of rare raw materials.
