Xbox Or PSP?

Hmmm. That’s a dilemma hard core gamers face when choosing between the two giants of the gaming world :P

Now, what if I tell you that you get an Xbox feature in your Sony Ericsson phone or let us say, I give you the opportunity to spend as little as possible on a phone of suitable platform and present to you a phone that booms and bangs your life with games based on real 3D, read again, REAL 3D graphical interface? Eh? Interesting?

Yea, that’s exactly what I felt when I got this little piece of news that Remi Pedersen, the Graphics Product Manager at ARM, has promised the possibility of Xbox 360 graphical Interface, implemented, yea you heard right, implemented, in phones supporting the celestial higher-end Mali-200 and Mali-400 processors! :o

Now, Mr. Remi completely refused to divulge information on such chip prices or ratings, Mali mobile GPUs are already showing up in some phones. The 65nm Mali-55 is a first generation core in LG Electronics’ Renoir phone. Partnered with an Arm CPU, that phone runs Flash, but unfortunately has no shader capabilities. But phew, it still has some advantage for being a tiny OpenGL ES GPU – good for 3D gaming. Hey, did you know that Apple iPhone supports OpenGL ES 1.1 as well?

For some technical detailing, Pedersen promises 4x Anti-Aliasing out of Mali which may be strtched to a further 16x maybe, but certainly not more :(

Hey, next time round, you may actually get hooked to handsets rocking the Mali-200 GPU. OpenGL ES 2.0, of which Apple is still oblivious :P ,  is completely shader-based, a subset desktop code. Difference is, it removes cluttered code but keeps vertex and pixel shaders. It’ll run 16 million triangles/second, 275 million pixels/second. And, yep, it’ll also be able to run Flash and Java games. ;)

The Mali-400 has the same basic performance, according to Pedersen, but is multicore scalable: From a single-core 100MHz mali-400 scaling up to quad-core at 300MHz. It can even scale to produce 1080p resolutions :O Oh My God!

Umm, hey nothing in life comes without a flaw right :( So the thing is, low power designed phones run a risk of being overclocked :(
ARM is working closely with several 3rd party developers. “It gives us a better view of how different systems will perform. Take feedback from developers to create the next gen CPUs and the silicon partners.” The problem with developers is that they are late, usually, at figuring out where to start :p LOL!

At the Game Developers’ Conference in San Francisco, Pedersen said: We’ll be able to see a port of Project Gotham Racer (Xbox 1) running in OpenGL ES. “Performance-wise, it runs like the original Xbox, but feature-wise it looks like an Xbox 360 title.;)

Now where does Sony Ericsson stand in this scenario? What a delightful thought! :P

Split, break-ups, rumours, truth and latest, PDA by Ericsson for Sony- all these have quite cramped the SE camp. And even if all these get cleared up and Sony permits the PSP clan to be transformed to a PSP phone, the question that is obviously coming to your mind is, will Sony forget its apparent rivalry with Xbox to gain the ultimate feat and  allow the production of phones running on Mali platform? That is to say, a new hi-fi platform, something to be called as a revolution?

The Answer is, there’s always a possibility. For all you may know, the anticipated Sony Ericsson PSP phone may actually sport Xbox features alongwith its usual speed and dynamics :P

And there’s only one word that describes my feeling as of now while I end this post- OMG! I can’t wait to see this happen :P ;) :D
