The much-anticipated Opera Mobile 9.7 server-accelerated browser for smartphones and mobile devices has been launched at the CTIA Wireless 2009 event. For carriers, Opera Mobile 9.7 with Opera Turbo provides “a more consistent and compelling full Internet experience” by compressing data up to 80%, thus reducing unwanted traffic and congestion and allowing users to access the Web regardless of network limitations
Additionally, the proprietary Opera Turbo offloads web page rendering to Opera servers, freeing up device resources. Opera says the new mobile version is 25 % faster than its predecessor.
Opera Mobile 9.7 with Opera Turbo gives our business customers the ability to bring a rich Internet browsing experience to their mobile device and to the end user without having to allocate new resources and development costs,” said Rod Hamlin, senior VP for Opera, in a statement.
Another standout is that the Opera Mobile 9.7 browser features Opera’s Presto 2.2 rendering engine and full support for web technologies like Ajax and Flash along with support for the Google Gears open source browser extension. Google Gears typically comes as a browser plug-in to allow users to access information offline on supported sites.
As more cell phone users browse the Web on the go, Opera is seeing increased competition. The company already has to compete with on-deck browsers like Apple’s mobile Safari and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Mobile, but it’s also seeing a crop of newcomers in the mobile browser space.
