Sony has unveiled the latest update to the A-Series Walkman

line with some serious features. The new NW-A840 series, available in black and brown,

simply is the most brilliant Walkman offering from Sony to date – it has all of the features people have been asking for in previous Walkmans while shedding what it needed to. It has a jaw-dropping 2.8 inch OLED screen. This is also the thinnest Walkman ever created at only 7.2mm. Sony has also finally come to the table with a better assortment of capacities – with the NW-A845 (16GB, Y24,000), NW-A846 (32GB,Y30,000), and NW-A847 (64GB, Y40,000) all due on October 31st. What’s also new for the first time is a TV-out function, that can output at 720×480 (SD) quality.

S640 and S740 Walkman Players
Sony has launched new NW-S640 and NW-S740 Walkman music players. These Walkman both have a 2.0 inch LCD, and the for the first time this generation the ability to output its display to TV at 720×480 (SD) resolution. One of the major features of the S740 series is noise canceling (non-digital), while both have expected things such as FM radio, Clear bass, Clear Stereo, and DSEE to color your sound.

There is also word of lyric display, and playback speed control for those learning languages. We are also very pleased to report Sony is bundling the MDR-EX300SL earphones with this device. The NW-S740 series comes in black, gold, green, violet, and has 8GB (NW-S744, Y16,000), 16GB (NW-S745, Y19,000), and 32GB (NW-S746,Y25,000) capacities. Sony Japan is also selling a S740 Walkman and matching color speaker bundle, known as the NW-S744K (Y19,000) and NW-S745K (Y22,000).

The only difference between the Sony S640 and S740 Walkman lines, other than the colors, is that the S640 doesn’t have noise canceling. The NW-S644 (8GB, Y14,000) and NW-645 (16GB, Y17,000) also have included speaker bundles – NW-S644K (Y17,000) and NW-S645K (Y20,000). The 8GB units will be available first on October 10th, while the others will arrive later that month on the 28th.

Battery life is pretty epic at 42 hours for music (128kbps mp3), and 10 hours video (384kbps MPEG-4). Codec support looks like MP3, WMA, AAC, HE-AAC, ATRAC, ATRAC AL, PCM/wav. I assume ATRAC support will probably be limited to Japan, but we are not sure yet. For movies, the usual AVC (H2.64), MPEG-4 and WMV are allowed.

Using clever tech the application uses metadata to detect players laughter and other forms of emotional expression during a game via microphone and camera.

According to the patent it will be used to detect a players “laugh”, “frown”, “yawn”, “applaud” or boo’s and other such outward emotions projected by gamers bodies.

The bizarre plans indicate that it could be used to measure a players reaction to what’s in front of them in order to keep them more entertained, which would come in particularly handy during incredibly long cutscenes *cough*Metal Gear Solid 4 *cough*.

If it does come to fruition it looks like Sony could find a way to implement it into the PlayStation Eye camera for PS3, which also has a microphone.

Sony’s not exactly new to emotion detecting tech. The company’s Sony Ericsson C905 mobile touts face detection to capture now commonly found on a range of cameras.

With a wire-free design meant for audio fans who want a simple and headphone only MP3 player to use on the go, the new Sony mp3 Player, the ultra portable W series is compact and lightweight (35g) and fits comfortably behind the head, so users can get active without getting tangled. It is available in five colors; black, white, pink, violet and lime and features 2GB of storage.

The design doesn’t allow for a display so Sony’s unique new ‘Zappin’ function is incorporated. By simply clicking the Jog Dial operation on the inside earpiece, the ‘Zappin’ mode helps users find tunes easily.

A quick charge feature has been incorporated that allows users to play back up to 90 minutes of music with only a three minute charge. A full charge will allow users to enjoy up to 12 hours of music playback. The W series also comes with a USB cradle to dock and charge the MP3 player.

Sony’s 13.5mm EX headphones have been utilised for this product and the ‘Content Transfer’ software supplied with the W series Walkman allows users to easily transfer non-DRM music files from online music services, such as iTunes, to the Walkman by simply ‘dragging and dropping’ files.

At a price tag of Rs. 4,990, the W series will be available at all Sony Center stores and retail partners across India.

Reports are suggesting that Sony will start work on an iPhone conquering “cellphone/game gear hybrid” as early as next month.

Reports and rumours of a Sony gaming phone are nothing new. Last month Sony Ericsson president Hideki Komiyama admitted that a PlayStation mobile “could happen.”

Now Japan’s Nikkei business daily is reporting that work on “a new product that combines functions of its portable game player and Sony Ericsson’s mobile phones” will start next month.

If such device does go ahead it’s likely to feature its own app store, like Apple’s after Sony earlier paved the way for non-gaming PSP applications.

UK pricing for Walkman Oled X has been announced. UK, you willsee the amazing walkman in stores from tomorrow.  Two versions of the Walkman X will be available – 16GB and 32GB – priced at £209 ($319) and £270 ($412) respectively!

The Sony OLED Walkman X has a 3-inch touchscreen, audio and video playback, plus WiFi for web browsing and YouTube access.  In the UK, the Walkman X will also be able to access BBC iPlayer streaming TV shows. This walkman is a perfect companion for your outdoor activities, long journeys and sports that uber-cool look. Ah, is Apple reading this?

Basic features like auto rotate between landscape and portrait mode have been removed. There’s no multi-gesture for moving around the menu system. There’s an image gallery but zooming in and out isn’t very intuitive. Moving between songs is relatively easy (see video / image below). There’s a web-browser from Access, and well, YouTube too.

The build quality is top notch, and it really hits the sweet spot between being sturdy and not too heavy. There’s no mistaking that this is a serious piece of kit when picking it up, and even the buttons are rock solid.

The 3-inch OLED display is spacious enough, yet the overall player is plenty small to sneak into tight spaces without causing too much fuss.

Despite appearing somewhat chintzy in the press shots, the look and feel in person really impresses. The texture adds a sense of security / grip when holding it, and it definitely acts as a differentiator from all the other flat-faced PMPs out there.

One can appreciate the standard 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, but Sony connector at the bottom should have been instead a  mini-USB connector! One will be forced to carry around a specialized cable

(à la Apple’s dock-connecting iPod) if you plan on charging it or adding / removing files via a computer. The built-in Noise Canceling switch is a welcome extra, though in our testing, we didn’t notice a difference with it on or off.

The volume rocker is perfectly placed atop the right side, and the Play / Pause, Skip Forward and Skip Backwards buttons are thoughtfully placed at the top of the unit, providing easy access when it’s shoved in your pocket. Sony has placed the Hold switch on the rear — rather than the side or top — of its OLED Walkman.

Finally, the single Home button on the bottom of the face makes it dead simple to escape whatever mess you’re in and get back to the front screen.

Boasting a 432 x 240 resolution, which is a few pixels less than on Cowon’s S9 (480 x 272), the panel is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Colors were dramatic, crisp and downright lovely. It really shines when viewing album art, photos and video, though we can’t help but bemoan the fact that Sony has inexplicably crippled the video mode to handle 320 x 240 clips at a maximum in most scenarios. Moving on,swiping the panel to move from album to album was effortless. So yeah, the OLED panel itself definitely lives up to the hype, but unfortunately we’re not so sure a fancy display justifies the steep increase in price versus LCD-based rivals.

UI. Metadata was laid out well, changing artists / albums / tracks was a cinch, and

browsing files was a lesson in simplicity. Loading the player up with media couldn’t have been easier.

Rather than having to deal with proprietary software, users can simply drag and drop files from their PC into the appropriate folder when it mounts in Windows Explorer or on the desktop of a Mac.

Sony’s OLED Walkman is leaps and bound more versatile than the litany of alternatives that lack WiFi, an FM tuner and a web browser (in theory, at least). Truth be told, it handles its core duties with class, playing back movie clips and audio files exactly as

you’d expect a higher-end PMP to do. Navigation is a breeze, the external buttons are excellent additions and the 33 hours (maximum) of battery life should be more than sufficient for most.
