We hit the gym with Sony Ericsson

rayray

On 27 September, the Sony Ericsson Run to the Beat half marathon is being held in London. We were invited along to a training session to meet Dr Costas Karageorghis, Reader in Sports Psychology at Brunel University to find out how music can help increase performance in sport.

Dr Costas is a focused man, with the sort of 1500m stare that 20 years researching the link between sport and music gives you, but we couldn’t help smiling at his lab coat. We don’t know if it was simply a way of stereotyping scientists, or because he expected us all to bleed this Saturday morning. Luckily for us, it’s the former.

The man has spent his research career investigating something he is clearly passionate about and the man is no couch potato himself as we soon found out. The lab coat came off, the floor cleared and Dr Costas put us through a warm-up routine with expert precision. Something that comes from coaching Brunel’s athletics team we guess.

Sony Ericsson issued us with W995 handsets, their flagship Walkman phone, preloaded with tracks for us to listen to during our exercises that day. But we weren’t just here for fun, we were being monitored and data was being gathered about our responses to the music, and how that impacts on our perception of the exercise.

It’s a micro-scale experiment compared with Run to the Beat. It’s a half marathon organised by IMG who also do the London Triathlon and other mass participation events. For Dr Costas, it’s a chance to see his research in action on a mass scale.

Dr Costas informed us that his research has highlighted tempos of 120-150bpm as ideal for running, bringing with it motivational benefits and lessening the perception of effort. But it’s a multifaceted connection with various psychophysical elements coming into play, something that the experiments made perfectly clear to us.

The show, which features a presenter talking to celebrities while wearing his underwear (quizzing in his pants), was designed as free downloadable show for mobile phones via http://pockettvshow.mobi.

It has also been extended to YouTube, where SE tells us it has been a big hit since its inception from 4 June.

“Miles to Go Before I Sleep”

This seems to be Sony Ericsson’s refrain now-a-days. The company’s I@the Road or what it calls its tagline “Sony Ericsson gives you the Journey” has taken an initiative to stop the mishappenings owing to mobile usage while drives. In some really cool (Read eco-Friendly) interface, we are made aware of the company’s growing (apparent) concern for road safety with maximum pleasure consumption :P

Special emphasis has been put on in-car devices that include the bluetooth headsets (VH 310 and VH 300 apart from other accessories)

Sony Ericsson, in this initiative, has been partnered by brands such as Audi, BMW, MINI, Honda, Lexlis, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, SAAB, Toyota etc.

Here’s where you need to start your Journey

Sony Ericsson has kicked off a regional activation drive, beginning in Indonesia, to promote the camera function of its C510 mobile phone.

The ‘Spread the Smiles’ campaign taps on the new Smile Shutter of the Cyber-shot mobile phone. Iris is charged with the overall campaign development. In Indonesia, the campaign taps on local TV stars to help build a ‘smiles’ wall.

A smile is an infectious thing and the Spread the Smiles campaign aims to capture the brightest smiles across Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand with the Smile Shutter on the C510,” said Peter Ang, vice-president, marketing, Asia-Pacific region at Sony Ericsson.

What we have done is to create a Smiles Wall where members of the public can use the C510 to capture their smiles, print the photos and mount them on the wall. In Indonesia, we held this event over a weekend at the National Stadium in Jakarta which attracted close to 3,000 people.

In addition to promoting the key features and fun element of the phone, we are also spreading the smiles by donating money for every smile collected. Thus far, we have raised close to US$5,000 for the Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa, education of underprivileged children and drug prevention programme in Indonesia.”

Launched in March, the campaign will continue through to June in Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand.
