Sony Ericsson axes sponsorship deals in move towards ‘Entertainment Unlimited’

Posted By: babz on in News, Release, Reviews, Rumors, Sony Ericsson - Comments: No Comments »

The manufacturer is changing focus

Sony Ericsson has dropped its sponsorship of Ibiza Rocks and cut out its channel partnership with Virgin Mobile for V Festival.

The manufacturer claimed the change of focus was a result of its ‘Entertainment Unlimited’ brand.

The move, which is set to save Sony Ericsson a substantial sum, was dismissed by some marketing sources as a cost cutting measure, although they admitted there was ‘strategic thinking around it’.

Sony Ericsson said it had dropped the sponsorships in a bid to make its brand ‘more ownable’, following the launch of ‘Entertainment Unlimited’.

The manufacturer was the founding sponsor of Ibiza music club Ibiza Rocks four years ago, and had been the handset partner for Virgin Mobile’s V Festival since 2007.

Sony Ericsson has not yet decided if it will renew its two year deal to sponsor half marathon Run to the Beat when it finishes next year.

At last! Age of the universal phone charger dawns !!!

The days of scrabbling around to find the correct mobile phone charger are to end after a landmark agreement between the leading manufacturers.

Companies including Apple, Nokia and Sony Ericsson yesterday promised to start offering phones that fit a universal charger from next year.

The move comes in response to anger from consumers who are landed with chargers with different connections for each phone bought.

Say goodbye to all these phone chargers. Mobile companies have agreed to go universal.

Most are thrown away, creating unnecessary cost and waste. There are more than 30 different chargers in circulation in member states of the European Union, which estimates that 51,000 are lying unused.

The other seven companies to sign the deal are Motorola, LG, NEC, Samsung, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and the BlackBerry maker Research in Motion.
The first generation of phones that use the same Micro-USB connection will go on sale from next year.

Sony to start work on gaming mobile next month?

Posted By: babz on June 28, 2009 in News, Reviews, Rumors, Sony, Sony Ericsson - Comments: No Comments »

Sony to start work on gaming mobile next month?

Reports are suggesting that Sony will start work on an iPhone conquering “cellphone/game gear hybrid” as early as next month.

Reports and rumours of a Sony gaming phone are nothing new. Last month Sony Ericsson president Hideki Komiyama admitted that a PlayStation mobile “could happen.”

Now Japan’s Nikkei business daily is reporting that work on “a new product that combines functions of its portable game player and Sony Ericsson’s mobile phones” will start next month.

If such device does go ahead it’s likely to feature its own app store, like Apple’s after Sony earlier paved the way for non-gaming PSP applications.

The Sony Ericsson T715 – for the lady who lunches – on time Review

Posted By: babz on June 27, 2009 in News, Release, Reviews, Sony Ericsson - Comments: No Comments »

We’re not quite sure of the market that the new Sony Ericsson T715 slider is aimed at, but its blurb talks about staying connected, and that seems to translate into having large SMS or IM text on a tiny device, with calendar reminders, web browsing and a large keyboard. It is described as credit card sized.

We figure it is quite business-like, but not an enterprise phone, more for the lady who lunches, than the man about town who has so many appointments that he misses lunch. We position it as a woman’s phone because of size, finish, available colours and its sophisticated look. It also has pop up reminders on the desktop, so you can’t stay too long at lunch and miss meetings.
